I have visited this great local butchers shop for the last 20 years on a weekly basis. Darrel aided by Harry and Colin who between them have many years expierence and it shows with a great display of quality hand cut fresh meats meats plus homemade sausages and pies. All products are sourced locally and there is always come at a competive price.”
Our Story
The shop was opened by Mr Harry Schofield just after the 2nd world war and continued to thrive when the shop was taken over by Mr Schofield’s daughter and son in law John and Brenda Fitton, the shop was run alongside Mr Fitton’s flourishing farm and wholesale meat business, due to increasing business Mr and Mrs Fitton employed a manager a High Crompton local man Mr Jack Bamford and assistant Mr John Taylor.
In 1987 a young improver was employed Darrel Lees from Newhey. Over the next 19 years with the support and backing of the Fitton family, Mr Lees started to introduce more variety to the already established traditional values! The increase in business was a great success and eventually led to Mr Lees taking over the ownership in 2006 but still continuing to source all his British beef, lamb and pork from Mr Fitton’s expanding wholesale meat business at Cowlishaw farm Royton (J&B Fitton ltd).
As well as being a retail shop to the public DH Lees & Sons supplies many local restaurants and offers discounts for bulk and freezer orders, traditional cuts of meat have been joined by a variety of new ranges from 7-day family packs to BBQ packs as well as producing their own large pies and rag puddings! After 35 years at the same shop, Mr Lees is assisted by his son Tommy Lees on the butchery department with Zena Rogers in charge of the homemade pie production.

Hi,
Great quality and value with that personal service. Something for every budget and occasion, you really cant beat it!!
As requested, see you next week.”
I have bought all my meat from this shop for well over 30 years. The meat is always excellent quality, the very best, which makes it good value for money because there is never any excess fat and no waste whatsoever. There are also many lines offered on bulk buy ‘special offers’ which again are good value for money.
There is always a really good display, sometimes I’m in there at 7.30 am and all the counter fridges are full even at that time with dozens of different types and cuts of meat, always well presented and clearly marked.. If there has been a ‘celebrity chef’ doing a dish using an unusual cut meat you can guarantee it will be available or if not (which is very rare) they will get it for you!. All the staff are very polite and helpful, they will cut meat any size you require and if necessary advise how it can be cooked.
An all round excellent local business that has provided an exeptional service for many years, and long may it continue!!”
